Let Go Of Who You THINK You're Supposed to Be

"Let go of who you think you're supposed to be; embrace who you are." ~ Brené Brown

In a world that’s constantly scrolling, swiping and liking, it’s easy to feel like being yourself just isn't enough. Whether it’s on social media, in the workplace or even during a conversation with a friend, we’re bombarded with curated highlights of other people’s lives. And before we know it, we’re looking at someone else’s story thinking, “I want to be like them when I ‘grow up.’”

We've all been there, myself included. But here's the thing...you were never meant to be anyone but YOU.

It’s tempting to emulate those we admire...their style, their confidence, their way with words. In public speaking, I see it happen all the time. People study their favorite speakers and think, I should move like that, sound like that, be like that. Then they come to me and say, "I want to speak like [insert name here]."

It's perfectly fine to admire and learn from others. The problem comes when we forget ourselves in the process.

The same applies to everyday life. When we constantly strive to fit in, we lose sight of the unique qualities that make us stand out. The truth is that REAL connection - the kind that makes you unstoppable - only happens when you’re unapologetically YOU.

You were born to fit out. Stop trying to conform and squeeze yourself into a mold that was never made for you. Each of us has our own unique superpowers (our gifts, strengths and quirks) just as we each have our kryptonites. The secret is to lean into those superpowers. Own them. Let them shine.

When you embrace who you truly are, you’ll notice something magical happen: you’ll attract the right people. The ones who see you, hear you and get you. And while you might not be for everyone, you’ll become the perfect fit for the people and opportunities that matter most.

So, how do you start?

Get Curious About Yourself: What makes you light up? What are your quirks? Where do you thrive? Spend time exploring these questions.

Ditch Perfection: Perfection is a myth that keeps you playing small. Instead of aiming for flawless, aim for authentic.

Take Small Risks: Share a story, a thought, or a moment that feels real and personal. See how it feels to let people in.

Embrace the Haters: Not everyone will love the real you, and that’s okay. It means you’re being authentic enough to draw in the right people while letting others walk away.

Remember, the goal isn’t to be liked by everyone; it’s to be truly seen by those who matter. And how will they see you if you don’t show them who you really are?

Your authenticity is your greatest strength. It’s what sets you apart, makes you memorable and helps you build those deep, meaningful connections. So stop hiding. Stop trying to fit in. Embrace who you are and watch as the right people and opportunities find their way to you.

Be YOU. That’s where the magic lives.

The next time you step onto a stage - whether it’s a literal stage, a conference room, a podcast, or even a networking event - remember this: your authentic self is your greatest asset. Forget about perfection or trying to emulate others. Speak with your own voice, share your unique stories, and let your genuine personality shine through.

Real connection happens when you’re real. That’s the foundation of powerful communication, and it’s how you leave a lasting impression wherever you go.
